Discussion:
TOS and virtual machines

Haven't had any of my Atari computers running in over 5 years, I keep
telling myself to get them set up, but life gets in the way.

Is is possible to install TOS in a virtual machine program? I have
Parallels Desktop for the Mac installed, and have XP and Vista
installed, working at getting Puppy Linux 5.25 running.

The recent post about ARAnyM got me to thinking about it. I've got some
Atari software I would sure like to easily regain access to.

NO, you need an Atari emulator of which there a number. ARAnyM is but one...

What type of Software. Each has its own special needs.

For a general classification, let's call it productivity software. I'm
not a gamer.

The one's that come to mind immediately are:

Calamus SL 98
Papyrus
InShape
DynaCADD

And others.

Of course, the ability to get it into a file I can save, print, export,
etc. out of the emulator should be obvious. :-)

Obviously from the sig, I'd prefer it runs on a Mac. But, I do have a
good XP/Vista dual boot machine here also.

I do miss the Atari days. :-(

Do you know the following WEB site, and related applications ?

iCalamus <http://www.icalamus.net/icalamus/index.php?lan=en>
Papyrus OFFICE <http://www.rom-logicware.com/>
InShape III <http://inshape.lutece.net/>

The interesting thing in ARAnyM's use, is about softwares that you
won't get natively on your non-ATARI host machine. There's quite a
lot, apart from ATARI applications that were already ported elsewhere.

ATARIstically yours =)

I knew that Papyrus was available for the PC, I found it while searching
for alternative PC office apps to MS Office. It was nice to know they
were still alive and kicking.

I knew Calamus is was alive, but didn't know there was a Mac version.

Did not know about InShape.

Another program I just remembered is PhotoLine, which I have the Atari
version of. And I know they are alive and kicking.

For right now, I'm not sure I have enough need for any of these programs
to purchase new and current versions. I think my needs can be met with
the Atari versions. And if I were to use the software in some sort of
"serious" mode, I'd get one of my Atari computers running before
purchasing anything new.

Thanks for the information on the ported versions, though. I'm glad
there are some Atari developers that have survived. I do just about
everything I can to avoid the mainstream software, such as Adobe and
Microsoft. I like competition. :-)

The original name is Christal ATARI Browser by Alexander Clauss.
xnView is developed by Pierre Gougelet. I can't remember for Toki.

Isn't that Darek Mihoka's (sp?) project? I've got an older PC version,
I'd completely forgot about it. I think I looked at it one time, found
it required technical knowledge to get it installed I don't have.

But I do have a Windows computer, I can always take another look at the
current version.

But of course, the best thing would be to get the TT or Hades up and
running! : grin :

It is a bit fiddley to get it working but for things like Calamus its great
because with the aid of some of the tools included you can use the entire
screen area of a PC monitor.

Not sure it is. Getting a TT going especially with a graphic card is a real
slog.

The Hades should be a simple matter of setting it up. :-) And the TT
was working when I disconnected everything and took it down for the last
move. But now, I have a black screen on bootup. Happened during a
previous move too, and fiddling/wiggling the monitor cable fixed it. At
the moment, I suspect an intermittent connection with the cable.

But it's a "time/space continuum" thing. I don't have much time, nor do
I have much space to set them up in. LOL
