Post by JoeAtariIf you want a quality recording (and monitoring) stay away from the
Falcon's standard inputs. You can use your analog mixer for input, but
you need some type of D/A converter like a DAT machine to go through,
or an ART D/IO (converts analog to digital) or something like that. A
mixer with a digital out is really the way to go. I have an Alesis
Multimix 12 FXD. I'm sure there is something better by now, but it
works like a charm with the coax out to the FDI coax in. The mixer has
built in effects (not great, but works okay for me). Whatever I have
plugged into the mixer gets converted to digital, sent to the FDI
and into the Falcon for Cubase Audio. The mixer also has a "control
room" section, so I don't need an additional output mixer to monitor
things. That silly little $100 and something mixer did away with a
whole rack fully of additional gear for me (effects and output mixer).

ok, I have the SoundPool Analog 8 which gives 8 RCA type Outputs.
I thought that it converted digital to Analog, ( i'll have to do some more
research on it).
Anyway, with some software, It will ouput a different song/sample on each of
the 8 outputs.
While other software will output a song or sample on all or just about all
of the 8 outputs.
Some software knows if the FDI and or Analog 8 is connected and you can
choose the way you want
to use it. So I'm tring to stay with the software that will use these
items. I also have 2 small Cubase DSP clocks.
That I can use on my other Falcons. I have several Falcons, and am in the
process of setting up a Studio based on
them. Also have a nice 1040STe, Mega STe, a SonoVista which is based on a
Falcon, Also a Mega ST4 that needs
a Video Shifter, and a STacy 4 that's apart for a upgrade project. Just
haven't had time to do the upgrades to it yet.
It will be a nice Stacy if all goes well. I'd like to put some type of PC
emulator board in it, I read that there was one
that would work in it, If anyone has one for sale/trade, let me know.
Also, did some experimenting with the TOS in the STacy, but it seems that it
has a special type of TOS and I'm not sure
if it can be upgraded. I'd like to upgrade it to at least Tos 1.62 the STe
TOS, as I know most stuff will run on that Tos.
Although TOS 2.06 or better wouldn't be bad for newer software.
I recall some software that allows you to boot up the TOS you want on a
Floppy. I have it here somewhere.
Not sure if it will work on a hard drive, as the STacy has one. 20megs, need
to put a larger one in.
One of the problems, I ran into with the STacy is the internal PowerSupply,
it sits over the 68000 or close to it.
I removed the 68000, and plan on putting in a 16mhz board with a 68000, and
maybe a tweety board.
I think I know a way to put the power supply in a different location. But
if there is another type of Power Supply
(Internal) that I can get, I'd like to know about it.
If anyone knows any other upgrades or modifications for the STacy, I would
like to know about them.
The Stacy 4 is normally monochrome, unless you connect it to a Monitor, I
did some experimenting with a
Video Key, and monitor master. It would be cool if I could find a way to
replace the STacys stock screen,
with one that I could do Color and Monochrome with. Maybe I could get
sometype of graphics card in there.
I have a spare ET4000, also a Nova but its in my MSTE.
I do have 2 SuperChargers, so I can connect one of them to the STacy. Maybe
if I take the board and find room
inside of the STacy and make some cuts for the ports. (Hmmm) that might
work. I'm only interested in running DOS
mostly anyway. And the SuperCharger gives you another meg to use IIRC.
Well, I got off topic, was talking about Falcons and Music. My Mixer is a
New Yamaha, has alot of ports, and effects.
As I set it all up, I'll see if I have to get a Mixer with a Coaxial port.
It may have one labeled sometthing else. If not,
I'll look for one if I have to have it to do what I have in mind.

I haven't used mine to go out to other equipment much. I have a mixer with
a coax out, which I use as an input mixer to my Falcon. The mixer also
provides the 44.1 clock. Whatever is
hooked up to the mixer is converted to digital for input to the Falcon.
I edit the audio with Cubase, and then mix everything down to a stereo
file.
A long time ago I used the optical out into a Sony minidisc recorder to
make masters and it worked great. You shouldn't have a problem doing
the same with whatever equipment you have that will accept digital
input at 44.1 CD quality.

I recently bought one and have a Analog 8.
And a Original Cubase Audio Package.
Have 2 Small DSP clocks.
Also have Logic Audio, with Unitor II and the other cart that
has more MIDI ports on it.
I'm not into MIDI alot, mostly D2D recording, making my
own Audio CDs.
I'm interested in the Coaxial part of the FDI.
I have some fiber optic cables that I think will work with it,
I need to know if I can use the Coaxial Input/output with a Mixer board.
to transfer Audio from the Falcon with FDI to Mixer, then on to
other recording equipment?
I got no manual with the FDI, I've read some about it on the Net,
But, I'm not finding the info, that I'm looking for. As to just what
it is capable of.
I can run the FDI with or without the Analog 8. But I need the
clock at 44.1 when working with Audio files, or D2D recording.
Any help is appreciated.

I'd like to find out more about going Out with the FDI, also about going IN.
With the FDI installed, I want to know if I can still use the Falcons
Standard Audio INput and OUTput too.
Thing is, I'm not sure if the FDI alone, is suppose to take place of the
Falcons standard Audio IN and Audio OUT.
Which this also may have something to do with the software you use, as Some
will allow you to select different options.
I'm working on a experiment with Audio and I don't want to screw up the DSP,
or the Falcons standard Audio IN and OUT.
The Mixer I have doesn't have a port labeled COAXIAL, which is what I will
be using. But it has alot of other ports like a AUX port.
And STEREO L and R, also MONO, Phantom Power switch, Mic Ports and etc.
Some have said that RCA cables can be used with
the FDIs Ports if you keep them short. I'm going to get some good Coaxil
cables anyway. And am looking for maybe another mixer that
has a Coaxial Port, also, maybe a effect Processor. Also maybe sometype of
Recorder. I know DAT, use to be big, but I'm not real
fimilar with it. Basically I want to do a Solo music project, And need to
do Some OverDubbing, recording Direct to Disk.
Also, looking for a good deal on a decent size SCSI hard drive if anyone has
one or two for decent price or trade. Need 50 Pin.
And Need some 68PIN SCSI converters to 50 PIN, if anyone has em. I have
around 20 new 68 pin SCSI drives, And I need
converters to make them 50 pin.
Any help, ideas, on the FDI and Analog 8, is appreciated. I'm trying to
understand how the FDI affects the Falcons Stock Audio system.
Before I start connecting things up. Cause I don't want to blow something
important.
BTW, just want to mention that I am selling alot of my extra Atari ST-Falcon
software and hardware and will trade also.
I'm looking for a good copy or original 4TFX or similar, It was one of the
first Audio Falcon programs that came out.
My version seems that one part works and the other bombs.
Also, looking for Audio software/ hardware I don't have. might be
interested in a JAM 4/8 IN or similar.
And anyone know about the CLAB Unitor II Cart? Like some info on the
Multi-port and the other IN port, as to what I can plug into
it with software other than Logic, if there is any.
