Networking under MagiCMac

Hello,
I have the bug to start messing around with my Atari software again. I
don’t have the space at the moment to setup my TT so this leaves me with
emulation on my Mac. Years ago I ran MagiCMac 1.2.5 on a Powerbook 165
and life was good. I still have MagiCMac 1.2.5 but that only runs under
Mac OSX 7.X and I have OS 9.22 and OSX 10.4.8 running on my G4 Cube. I
run OSX 98% of the time on it. I downloaded the OS9 and OSX demos of
MagiCMac and have each one running OK on my machine. Stinks that they
only run for 15 minutes before terminating but it is at least giving me
a feel of how each runs on my machine and MagiC really runs great so
far. I remember reading years ago about MagiCMac under OS9 being able
to use the Mac’s built in TCP/IP stack and Ethernet card. This allowed
Cab, FTP programs E-mail, Chat, or whatever to use the Mac’s high speed
Internet connection. Problem is I have not been able to find any
documentation or configuration files on how to do this. It may be
something very simple and obvious in the MagiCMac setup but since the
demos and included documentation are in German I have not been able to
figure it out. Does anyone know how to configure MagiCMac to use Mac OS
TCP/IP and network card? If I can get it working under the demo version
then I would be more inclined to spend the money to get the real deal.
When researching how to do this I ran across some statements on the Web
that ARAnyM claims to be able to do this also. I have not tried ARAnyM
in many years and I did not recall this feature back then. Is this
built in and automatic or is there anything special that needs to be
done to get to be able to use your host OS networking under ARAnyM?

You mean MacTCP-Connect - this hack runs only with old Macs that has
the ROM not in a File... and definitely not with MMX!

IIRC Andreas Kromke mentioned that an XCMD module would have to be
written to allow this.

I see that I have translations of some of the docs that came with
MagicMacX - I must get these online at some point.

Well today I stumbled upon this ASH sold/supplied? a program called
MACSTIP that does what I am after. Google/Yahoo/favorite search engines
turn up almost nothing at all about this program. I've never heard
about this program before as I am sure most of you have not either
unless you were a MagiCMac user when it was released and you actually
used it.

Also I read bits and pieces translated from German or French about a
program called ICAT that sounds like it may do the same thing. I have a
web page translated on this printed out and will have to study it closer
to see if in fact this will do what I am after.

Cool, Where do I get MacSTIP
Ask for MacTCP-Connect directly at ASH - Oliver Buchmann
Post by FMH
how do I configure it?
Isn't necessary! STip v1.0 starts from the AUTO folder and you must
start MacSTip v0.9d manually at the Mac side - after that ICONNECT
can now connect via the Mac OS TCP/IP network... that's all!

MacSTIp or MagiCMac OS9 or OSX
MacTCP-Connect won't work under Mac OS X! MacSTip as a part of MacTCP-
Connect is a crude hack that runs only with Old World ROM machines!

OK, I have Old World ROM machines. Currently setup is my Mac 9600-200
in which I installed MagiCMac for OS9 under. So if i run MagiCMac for
OS9 on my 9600 I already have everything I need? If so how do I
configure it, IConnect, or whatever is required to get it to work?

I do remember years ago on the MagiC Support Site http://magic-sides.de
that people had access to the Mac OS9 TCP on 2nd and 3rd generation
iMacs so there was some software or feature to allow them on New World
Machines to use the Mac OS TCP.

OK, I have Old World ROM machines.
Fine! I've a PB540c (Mac OS 7.6) and a Quadra840av (Mac OS 8.1)
running under MM - mostly rockstable...
Post by FMH
Currently setup is my Mac 9600-200 in which I installed MagiCMac for
OS9 under
Mac OS 9? Why? I've a PowerMac G3-***@399MHz (overclocked) too and it
still works fine under Mac OS 8.6...
Post by FMH
So if i run MagiCMac for OS9 on my 9600 I already have everything I
need?
Yoh! But for your machine IMHO Mac OS 7.6.1 would be enough (small and
beautiful) if you don't have HDs bigger than 4 GB and Mac OS 8.6 (not
so small but much more beautiful) has simply all you need - Mac OS 9
is just overkill! BTW: You properly would need FPUPATCH.TOS...
Post by FMH
If so how do I configure it
First of all: Configure your Mac TCP/IP connections - you need a
working Mac TCP/IP network! Than copy from the Mac OS folder inside
MacTCP-Connect-Disk MacSTip somewhere you can find it; now change into
MM and run SETUP.PRG from the MAGIC folder - therefore you need BTW a
serial, but you can simply use your CrAB 2.8 serial!

SETUP.PRG will install a very old PPP-Connect, so be careful and make
before running it a buckup of your PPP folder and from SOCKETS.PRG
inside your AUTO folder! After running SETUP.PRG restore your PPP
folder by overwriting it with your backup and SOCKETS.PRG - now
you should've STIP.PRG inside your PPP folder and AUTOSTIP.PRG
inside AUTO folder and a new CAB.OVL - that's all you need!
Post by FMH
IConnect, or whatever is required to get it to work?
Yoh! With ICONF.PRG you configure now ICONNECT to work /via Mac-OS/
and that's normally all - but you also can tune it a littel bit using
the Pro mode: Increase eg the DNS-Cache at 256 KByte and adjust the
MTU at 1492 and TTL at ~ 117... and don't forget to store it!

After that change to Mac OS and start MacSTip manually - it will open
the Mac TCP/IP network for ICONNECT! Now change to MM run ICONNECT and
enjoy speed with CrAB or HIGHWIRE (with iconnect.ovl as network.ovl)...
Post by FMH

that people had access to the Mac OS9 TCP on 2nd and 3rd generation

Machines to use the Mac OS TCP.
I never used Mac OS 9 - I change after G3-MT to Win32 and use w2k now;
therefore I've M_PC too but normally don't used it... my 68k-Macs
under MM are fast enough for me!

Ups! If you've also iFusion (STiK/STinG over IConnect) than you really
should've everything you (properly ever) need... ;-)

BTW: And don't forget to add AUTOSTIP.PRG into AUTOEXEC.BAT!

Well last night I tried running the demo of MagiCMac 6.x for OS9 in the
Classic Envirnment on my G5. All I got after the spash screen was a white
screen and the system froze. Not good I'll try with other version of
MagiCMac that I have and see what happens.
